Hello. It's just 5pm, but I'm am really tired. I was serious about what I said at the end of yesterday's post. The part about "enough slacking". So today, I woke up at 6.30am and took my shower, then I followed my father and brother to the temple [Praying doesn't help to improve your exam results, but it tends to give people a false sense of confidence, so I'm alright with it].

I came home at about 8am, took my breakfast, and started studying at 8.30am. According to my time table, today is my Chemistry day. So I was only going to do Chemistry and nothing else. I set my phone's countdown timer to 2hrs, and I sat in the room and studied until the 2hrs were up. Then I watched TV for 30 mins, then I did another 2hrs.

I ate lunch after that, and read one Animorph book. Then I studied for a final 1hr. Damn. 5hrs man. I'm almost half a China student!! Amazing. I decided not to study anymore for the rest of today, so I turned on my computer and started to type this post.

Since everyone thinks I'm good at English, I'm doing this guide, and hopefully it'll help people.

Guide to doing well in English

This are some things I do that I think help me with my English.

1) Study English?
I'm used to people asking me "How do you study English?" by now, but seriously, English cannot be studied. Same goes for any language. Of course, you have to master the fundamentals of the language, like pronunciation, writing, and tenses, but other than that, there is really nothing else to learn.

Yes, some people know an impressive amount of vocabulary words, but that doesn't mean that you have to memorize page after page of more advanced words before your composition paper. It may work for some people, but it might not work for you.

I think that you're just shooting yourself in the leg if you try to do that. Just because you roughly know the meaning of the word, doesn't mean it is appropriate to use that word in the sentence you are constructing. In order to used advanced words, you have to really know what the words mean. And there's a much better way to do this, bring us to the second point.

2) READ!!
Some people might think that reading is a chore, but it is probably the most important, as well as the easiest, way to improve your English. Comics are fine, but don't just read comics and nothing else. When I read a book, I always keep a notebook with me, so that I can immediately write down any word I do not understand in it.

I will then search for the meaning in a dictionary, then I will write the meaning down in the note book, and then I will read the sentence with the word one more time, making sure that I understand how the word is used. This way, you can improve your vocabulary.

3) Take a liking to the subject!!
This not only applies to English, but to any subject. If you are forever thinking negatively about the subject, or if you dislike the subject teacher, you will never be able to do well. So what if the teacher sucks? She is just doing a job. You probably won't even remember her 10 years from now.

Once you take a positive attitude towards the subject, you will naturally want to do well in it. This might not sound like a big deal, but it actually helps. Also, don't be discouraged by your previous marks. So what if you failed? Keep striving to do better and you will get the desired results.

4) Listen to you teacher!!
Alright, I'll admit it, I'm learning to do this too. I've never taken Mr Quayle's advice seriously, but I think I should. Plan first and write within the word limit for composition, directly copy if the question doesn't say "In your own words" for composition, and write down and organise at least 18 points before doing the actual summary. These will definitely help. I hope.

5) Use proper English!!
Ok, I know Singlish is a daily thing, and it is alright, but using it even when you're not talking is not good. When you are writing or typing, do not use Singlish. Also, I try not to use short forms of words in case I write them in my examination composition out of habit. If you look at my posts, or at my SMSes, they're mostly in proper English.

Speaking more English than other languages also helps as not one does it give you confidence in the language, it also allows you to write more fluent compositions.

*Bonus*
The best way to improve your composition is to probably start writing a story [not a short passage, a several hundred page long piece of work], and keep writing it during your free time. At least that's what I do. However, time is short right now, so don't try to do that.
