Yesterday I talked about the five games that I regretted buying. Today, I'm going to talk about the five games I would have bought in place of those other five. Like yesterday's list, this is a countdown, so that means the game at #5 is the one I want the least, and #1 is the one I want the most.
Why I didn't buy it: It was released around the same time as the start of the O levels, so I didn't buy it at launch. Towards the end of the year, when there were lots of games being released, I had a shortage of cash.
In order to buy other games, I used the money meant for this one. Eventually I lost interest in it and I didn't buy it. However, I played the demo again a while ago, and it was fun, so I'll probably buy this one once it's selling price falls to about $30-$40.
Why I didn't buy it: It was released on the same day as Street Fighter IV, but I had to manage the money in my bank account. I have $150 set aside for games, so I cannot buy any games if I use up that amount. Back when Ninja Blade was released, I didn't have enough cash to get it, but now I do and I'll probably be getting it soon.
Why I didn't buy it: It one of the last few games to be released in 2008, and by the time it was out, I was already busy with the other games I bought during the holiday season. I planned to buy it later on, but I eventually lost interest.
Also, the fact that the game is full of back tracking made me think twice before buying it. Still, it is a great looking game with good voice acting and a well written story, so I will eventually still buy it, just not too soon.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) Mass Effect -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Average Review Score: 9.1/10
Why I didn't buy it: When it was first released back in 2007, it was the first game with an M18 rating. This was due to the fact that you could have sex with another female character, regardless of whether your character is male or female. Singapore has a problem with homosexuality.
Also, since this topic was heavily covered by the press, it was impossible to get my parents to help me get this. Now that I'm much closer to that age rating, I'll probably be getting this one soon. I need to see for myself what makes this one of the best Role Playing Games ever made.
Why I didn't buy it: Same reason why I didn't buy Ninja Blade. Also, the its $89 price tag made me hesitate from buying it. Still, this is considered one of the best fighting games ever made, and it isStreet Fighter, so I'm definitely going to buy it. Now that I have enough money, I'm going to buy it next week.
I am being so lazy today lol. I went out for a while until about 5pm. I collected my copy of Halo Wars, and it is pretty much the best limited edition I have ever bought. For $90, I'm getting things worth much more. Also, the box that the game comes in is super awesome. Some photos:
The full package.
The front of the box. It is has a metallic finish.
The back of the box. Same metallic finish.
Both sides plus the spine of the box.
Two cards to redeem a whole bunch of free stuff from Xbox Live.
The bonus stuff all came in this box.
UNSC Spirit of Fire emblem. It is made out of the same plastic/rubber material that many keychains are made from.
Six character cards which state the special abilities of these characters.
Halo Wars Genesis, a hard cover comic book which is about the events that lead up to the story of Halo Wars.
One of the first few pages of Halo Wars Genesis.
Free Xbox 360 controller battery pack. It usually costs $17.
Free Play and Charge kit and another battery pack. This would usually cost $30.
I'm aiming an orbital cannon at a Wraith tank.
Wraith tank goes boom.
Ok, I'm done for today. Thanks for reading. [KOAS Kim!! :D] Ok, ending off, see you tomorrow.
Ever since I got my first Xbox 360 game back in 2006, my collection has always been growing. At the beginning, I used to buy games on impulse. Just because the box art looked good, and the description on the back was intriguing, I would buy the game.
I slowly started to research before buying games, so that I would only get the good ones. Now, my number of games is almost reaching 50. But does that mean I like every single one of them? Definitely no. Here is a countdown to the 5 games that I totally regret buying.
Why I bought it: The trailers were cool, and it was #1 on EGM magazine's "Top 50 New Games We're Looking Forward To" article. Also, the game promised a whole lot of co-op moves, but no one mentioned anything about half of them being cut out of the final game.
Pros: Decent when played on co-op; the back to back move is cool; the main characters are badass; several unique features like sniping enemies from a parachute; taunt moves, like the air guitar or the one where you headbutt your team mate, are fun to do; weapon customisation is cool; online multiplayer is pretty good.
Cons: Story is dumb; game is very short; cover system and controls suck; the weapons purchasing system isn't good; difficulty of enemies can be unforgiving at certain points; partner AI is stupid; little co-op moves; no vehicles other than a hydrofoil; super repetitive game play; some enemies, like the armoured guys, are a little overpowered.
What I think of it now: It was fun at first, but after doing the same thing over and over again throughout the entire game, it got boring. When completing the game, I wasn't really feeling a sense of accomplishment. Instead, I was feeling more like, "Oh, thank god it's over. Goodbye and good riddance."
Before the game was released, there was a reviewer which dubbed the game "Army of Shit", because he found it a total mess. I feel that it isn't that bad. If playing alone, it is pretty crappy, but it does get alright when played with a friend. Still, the short story line and unsatisfying game play makes this game a rental at most.
Why I bought it: Everyone was talking about it at that point of time, so I got into the craze as well. I ended up buying both the PC and the Xbox 360 version, and while I'm not too fond of both, I regret buying the Xbox 360 version more.
Pros: Good story; awesome live action cutscenes; massive amounts of units; fast pace game play; good graphics; good AI; very fun to watch a nuke or orbital laser tear through an enemy base.
Cons: Too complex and fast pace for people new to strategy games; I don't even like strategy games in the first place.
What I think of it now: It is a fun game, and there is nothing wrong with it that makes me regret buying it. I don't enjoy strategy games, so it feels like a waste that I bought it. I never even bothered playing past the third mission.
Also, while Tiberium Wars is a great strategy game, I find a slower paced one like Halo Wars is more suitable for a console since controllers don't have the speed and precision of a mouse and keyboard. While this control issue may seem like a small thing, it actually really kills the fun of playing the game.
Why I bought it: My brother and I were fans of the previous Def Jam game, Def Jam: Fight for New York, so we expected Icon to be great as well. Def Jam Icon turned out to be alright, but no where near as fun as the previous game.
Pros: Environment moves to the beat of the music; good graphics; decent story; great soundtrack; large character roster; multiple different fighting styles to choose from; wounds and bruises can be seen appearing on characters as they take damage; fully customisable character and crib.
Cons: Fighting is too slow pace; controls for the "DJ" feature take a while to get used to; health bar is turned off my default, making it very confusing; voice acting is not too good; some characters clearly overpowered.
What I think of it now: It's a decent fighting game that might be worth a rent. If you're into the whole "gangsta" thing, you'll love this game, but if not, there are much better fighting games around. Still, it is worth a try to see for yourself how the environment moves to the music.
Why I bought it: I must have been possessed at that time.
Pros: Flying; running at super speed; eye lasers; artic breath; super breath; being Superman is awesome; large city; able to play as other characters like Bizarro.
Cons: Story sucks; buildings in city are repeated many times; bad graphics; Superman gets damaged as the city gets damaged, meaning that you can kill yourself if you keep firing lasers at people; no instructions, so you often don't know what to do; few bosses; last boss is a tornado, how dumb is that; voice acting sucks; enemies can be really irritating.
What I think of it now: The only redeeming factor of this one is that you get to be Superman, and at least that is a bit fun. It is cool to fly at super speed, and after a while there will be a sonic boom and you will fly even faster. Also, the game's Achievements are super easy to unlock, so if you are an Achievement whore, rent it, if not, avoid it.
Why I bought it: There was a series of game play videos released a month before the launch of this game. The footage shown looked awesome. Looked. When you actually play the game, it's a whole different story. Also, the footage they showed us consisted of the best bits of the game.
Pros: Story is somewhat interesting; you can skip levels you don't want to play; realistic game play; good cutscenes and voice acting; the game begins well.
Cons: Horrible controls; worst camera in gaming history; missions are ridiculous; most characters are assholes; graphical glitches; extreme lag/freezing; stupid ending; game tries to be too realistic; so dark that it is hard to see things; tons of bugs; idiotic AI.
What I think of it now: I only have three comments about it. One, it is probably the number one bastard game of this generation. Two, it is the embodiment of suck. And three, it is the epitome of bullshit.
So please don't ever buy it and subject yourself to intense physical and mental torture. In fact, don't even look at it on the store shelves. Trust me on this one, it is horrible beyond belief. I cannot believe I actually spent $72 on the abomination, because now I wouldn't want it even if it was free.
The new Naruto and Bleach chapters are up. I'm embedding some pages. Click to enlarge.
This week's Naruto was awesome!! Hinata tries to rescue Naruto, but Naruto asks her to escape since Pain is too powerful. Hinata doesn't want to and she admits to Naruto that she loves him. Then she tries to attack Pain, but she gets taken down instead.
Naruto gets pissed and he goes into demon fox mode. But unlike previous times, when he only has up to four tails, he has six tails now. He looks something like four tails, but with six tails of course, and a badass looking bone armour. Epic stuff, can't wait for the next chapter. Some pages:
Hinata comes to the rescue.
She wants to protect Naruto.
Some romantic talk.
Some more romantic talk.
OMG :0
Pain takes down Hinata, and Naruto gets pissed.
Fox Naruto is pwn.
Wow so sexy <3>
This week's Bleach was pretty good too. Ulquiorra attacks Ichigo again and again, and although Ichigo is badly hurt, he refuses to let go of his sword and give up. So Ulquiorra goes into the fully unleashed form, which resembles a cross between an emo woman and Criss Angel. Some pages:
Ichigo's mask is shattered from the impact of Ulquiorra's cero.
The cero took out half of the dome.
Ichigo is in quite a bad state.
But Ulquiorra still attacks.
However, Ichigo refuses to give up.
Whoa, first time Ulquiorra is being that expressive.
Look at the impact of Ulquiorra's attack.
Ichigo completely interrupts Ulquiorra's little speech.
He still doesn't want to give up.
Ulquiorra gets impatiant and reveals his true form.
I played Halo 3 on Xbox Live with my brother for the first time in quite a while. After not playing the game for that long, it is quite refreshing to play it again. It is actually fun now. I also noticed that some people are playing Halo Wars online, so I'll probably be getting my copy soon. I actually forgot that the game launched yesterday.
I went to meet Kim for a while after that. Now that I think of it, I've been meeting her everyday this week. But it's alright and I don't mind. I will try to meet her everyday until school starts!! I am even starting to understand some JC stuff after reading her notes. Anyways, KOAS Kimberlyn Wong!! :D
Ok, I'm done for today. Thanks for reading. Ending off, see you tomorrow.
Hello. Today is the final post on the Halo series. The topic for today is:
If you are not too familiar with video games, you will be surprised at how much fans a single video game can have. Most games, even the less known ones, can easily have thousands of fans. When it comes to bigger games, like Mass Effect or Resistance, the fan base can reach hundreds of thousands. But with the Halo franchise, it's not hundreds of thousands of fans we're talking about.
More like millions.
Halo is the series with the most hardcore fans. Flame Halo in forums, and you'll get a bunch of fans on you. However, in recent years, many of the once hardcore fans, myself included, started drifting away from the series. Things like this don't just happen. There are reason that cause us to lose interest in the game.
To fully understand why the Halo series has lost its appeal, here's a time line of the series, from the first game to the third, and the impact of each one, and other factors that caused the fall of the series.
This is the first Halo game ever to be made, and it is also the game that shook the game industry so hard when it was released that the industry would never be the same again. The game was an instant classic.
The story line was epic, the characters were interesting, the weapons felt good to use, and the alien environments were fun to explore. Halo: CE also had a solid multiplayer component that could be played by 4 players in the same room.
Halo: CE is often considered to be the game that started the whole console first person shooter trend. Before it, FPS games were strictly PC only, but after the phenomenal success of Halo: CE, many other developers started making FPS console games as well.
Among all three Halo games, Halo: CE is the best. Playing it for the first time was like a breath of fresh air. No one had ever played such a game before, so it was a new experience for all who played it.
Halo: CE may not be as appealing to look at as most games today, but it had a certain magic to it. Now, about 6 years after I first completed the Campaign mode of Halo: CE, I can still remember the levels clearly.
From the eerie silence of the jungles and underground facilities in the level 343 Guilty Spark, to the adrenaline rush of speeding down path ways in a Warthog trying to escape the exploding fusion core of a battleship in the level the Maw, Halo: CE provided gamers with something to remember.
Multiplayer was a memerable experience as well. In fact, the multiplayer of Halo: CE is what made me get into gaming. I still remember the late nights I spent playing the multiplayer with my father and brother.
I remember how the sniper was ridiculously easy to use, and how grenades could be thrown so far and accurately. And of course, Halo: CE also has every one's favourite beast of a pistol. You know, the one that could put an enemy down hundreds of meters away with three shots.
In fact, to this day, I don't think any FPS game has managed to top the story mode of Halo: CE yet, and I don't think there ever will be. Those were the times when people, regardless of which console they owned, truly respected the name.
After the success of the first Halo game, Microsoft gave the green light to Bungie studios to start work on a sequel. The series now had millions of fans worldwide, and many of them were craving for more. After Microsoft made the announcement that Halo 2 was coming, fans finally had concrete evidence that it was coming, and the waiting began.
Bungie teased the fans by releasing information slowly, and the anticipation and hype of the game slowly built up. When the game was released on November 9th 2004, thousands attended the midnight launch of the game. I was at the Singapore launch of Halo 2, which was held at Funan.
While Halo 2 showed massive improvements over Halo: CE, the story mode just didn't pack the same punch as the one in the original game. Still, Halo 2 was packed to the brim with new features. Dual wielding, vehicular hijacking, new weapons, new game modes, and one of the best multiplayer modes of all time.
Halo 2 is the game that showed everyone just how important multiplayer was to a game. Xbox Live activity increased by more than 80% after the launch of Halo 2. People loved it, and they played it everyday. In fact, even now, five years after the launch of the game, people still play Halo 2 online.
After introducing a robust multiplayer element to the gaming world, many other games have tried to mimic its success, but few have managed to do it. Halo 2 is the game with the best multiplayer among all games on the Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube.
It is only now, in this generation that we are currently in, that games are starting to have great multiplayer modes. But no matter what it is, everyone will remember that it was Halo 2 that started it.
Halo 2 had a cliff hanger ending, so fans knew that Halo 3 was definitely on the way. Bungie, being Bungie, decided to tease fans again by giving very little information at the start, but gradually more and more as the release date grew closer.
When the game launched, the reviews were all positive, but many hardcore fans were disappointed. Sure, Halo 3 was a good game, but it didn't do much to improve on Halo 2. If Halo 3 was the first Halo game you played, you would be in love with it, but not if you've been with the series since the beginning.
That doesn't mean that Halo 3 didn't have any improvements at all. The graphics were obviously better, and there were new weapons. The idea of equipment and portable heavy weapons were also introduced, and these ideas are being used in other recent games. Still, it didn't do much that Halo 2 already had done.
Overall, Halo 3's multiplayer was satisfying, but the Campaign mode was a disappointment. The story was good, but it was played out well enough in the Campaign mode. A lot of potential to be the best Halo game, but Bungie wasted their chance with Halo 3.
After the launch of Halo 3, the amount of Halo fans decreased by quite a bit. Before Halo 3, if some one flamed Halo in forums, a bunch of Halo fans would defend the name. Now, no one really cares. Also, while Halo 2 constantly remained the top of the Xbox Live charts, Halo 3 is never at that position for more than a month.
So why the sudden change? I've been thinking about it for a while, and I've come up with several reasons.
~~~
#1: Halo 3 was over hyped. This is definitely true. Trailers for the game aired on television screens internationally. Skyscraper sized posters of the Master Chief were put up as the release date grew closer. The Halo 3 launch event was so huge that in New York, the entire Times Square had to be closed down for it.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is, no matter how good Halo 3 is, there is no way it can live up to the hype. It could have been the best game in the world, and still it wouldn't be able to deliver on the hype. So obviously, many people were disappointed.
~~~
#2: Halo 3 had strong competition. When Halo 2 launched, there was nothing at all that could compete with it on any console. However, Halo 3 already had Gear of War to compete with before it launched. To make things worse, Call of Duty 4 was released a few months later.
I'm going to be honest here. If Call of Duty 4 was never released, I would really think that Halo 3 was the best multiplayer experience available, and I would be playing it everyday. But the truth is, Call of Duty 4 is better. That is probably why it is on the number one spot on Xbox Live most of the time.
~~~
#3: Halo 3 simply isn't as good as the other Halo games. The story mode wasn't memorable in any way. It was great at its best, but could become downright irritating at some points. Also, Bungie decided to kill off certain fan favourites, like Sgt. Johnson, and not everyone was pleased with that.
While Halo 3's multiplayer is fun, it isn't near as good as Halo 2's. Back then, Bungie really knew what they were doing. Maps and weapons were balanced, and the game played out at just the right speed, and with just the right intensity. Halo 3's multiplayer does these as well, but just not as well as the previous game.
~~~
#4: Halo 3's online community is filled with jerks. Racists, smart ass kids, people who just love spewing vulgarities, Halo 3 has them all. It really spoils the experience. They are the reason why I play online without my headset.
It's not as if there aren't any nice people online. There are, in other games, but for some reason, they just don't want to play Halo 3 online. Probably the same reasons why I don't want to play it online.
~~~
#5: The difficulty curve of learning how to play Halo 3 online is crazy. When it first launched, there were still tons of noobs online, but after not playing the game for a long time, everyone playing Halo 3 online is either a pro, or a noob. There isn't really an 'average' Halo 3 player, because if you are in the middle, noob players see you as a pro, and pro players see you as a noob.
Although there is match making, it doesn't really work since most people will have a higher rank than you. Also, why the hell does it take so long to get into a match. I can get into a Call of Duty 4 match in 20 seconds, while I have waited to get into a Halo 3 match for 20 minutes before.
~~~
Although the Halo series might have lost many fans, and it may seem that no one really cares about it anymore, it is slowly regaining its popularity again. With Halo Wars and Halo 3 ODST coming out this year, I am seeing the amount of positive Halo related comments increase in forums and chat rooms.
The main Halo trilogy might have ended, but the Halo universe is still young, and there is still a large portion of it left unexplored. Other than Halo Wars and Halo 3 ODST, there are three other untitled Halo games in the works that are due in 2010 to 2011. In fact, it is rumoured that a launch title of the next Xbox will be a Halo game.
Halo started off as a small name, it gained popularity after Halo: CE, continued upwards with Halo 2, and while it might have stumbled and fell after Halo 3, the franchise is slowly picking itself back up and moving on.
I may have lost faith in Halo for a while, but now, with Halo 3 ODST on the way, I am slowly feeling that sense of excitement again. The one I had while waiting for the previous games. Looking forward to play Halo 3 ODST. Maybe it'll be the game that makes me a Halo fanboy again. We'll see.
First, this is a video of local band 'A Vacant Affair'. They appeared on Live n Loaded a few weeks ago, and they are actually quite good. This, compared to local music a few years ago, is pretty damn amazing.
Next, a video review of the Watchmen movie. I wasn't too eager to watch it, because the comic series it is based on has a really complex storyline, little action, and deep characters, so I knew that it wasn't going to be easy. Many people felt that Watchmen would fail, but this review says otherwise. Now I really need to watch it.
Here is a video of the one of the freakiest things I have ever seen.
Finally, this is the announcement trailer of Last Planet 2. The first game was good, and the second on looks even better. Huge bosses. 4 player co-op. Most importantly, no more snow. Seeing white all the time gets a little boring after while.
Played a whole lot of Oblivion today. Thieves Guild is awesome!! Infinite lockpicks, and it is fun to sneak into some one's house and steal every single thing from them, from the valuable things like gold, to the pointless stuff like fruits. I also went out for dinner.
Ok, I'm done for today. Thanks for reading. Ending off, see you tomorrow.
Hello. Today is part two of the Halo topic. This post is going to be about:
Yesterday, I already did a guide to the various species to give you a basic idea of them, so today and can expand on that and go more in dept. I'm going to be doing a guide to all the main characters of the core trilogy.
Master Chief is the main protagonist of the Halo series. He has been training since the age of six, and he has had various modifications and augmentations made to his body. These allows him to run faster, jump further and hit harder than any other human being.
His real name is John, but only a few people actually call him that. He is know throughout the human forces only by his rank, Master Chief, or as Spartan 117, which was the number given to him during his training. It is not known why the Chief got the number 117, but many people suggest this reason: "John 1 Chapter 1, Verse 7, is a passage referring God who relinquished all evil from the world so people could believe."
Master Chief wears the Mjolnir Mark VI armour almost at all times. The armour has a energy shield surrounding it, so the Chief will be able to soak up more damage. However, once the shield is completely drained, the Chief will be in an extremely vulnerable position, and a few well placed shots will be enough to kill him.
The armour also allows Master Chief to leap several meters in a single jump, and it allows him to run at speeds of up to 60km/h. It also grants him enough strength to flip a tank if the tank is over turned. The armour can be modified at any time to help the Chief further.
For example, it can be rendered almost invisible, or the shields on it can be strenghtened by several times at the expanse of a slower movement speed. The armour also has a port at the back of the neck, and this port is linked directly to the Chief's brain.
Artificial Intelligence can be placed into this port, and both the Spartan and the A.I will be able to communicate at the speed of thought. This allows the A.I to help the Spartan with tactical planning, and it could also stream information directly into the Spartan's brain.
The helmet that the Chief wears has a Heads Up Display [HUD]. It looks exactly how your screen looks. It displays everything the Chief needs to know. There's the target reticule for better aiming, a radar, a shield indicator, an ammo counter, and additional information can be added any time there is a need.
Master Chief was introduced right a the start of Halo: CE. He was awaken from cyro sleep on board the Pillar of Autumn. For many of us, that scene of the Master Chief stepping out of the cyro pod is something that cannot be forgotten.
At the end of the Halo 3, after the defeat of the Covenant, Master Chief went back into cyro sleep in a ship floating in space. However, as the Chief drifted closer to an unknown planet, a bright glow was emitted from the planet. This planet is said to be related to the Marathon series, which is the series Bungie was working on prior to the Halo games.
After the Chief went into cyro sleep again, the human forces didn't know his exact locations, or what exactly happened to him. However, they did know that he was one of the greatest heroes mankind had ever known. So while he was stated as Missing In Action by the military, he was said to have been Killed In Action to the public.
This was so that people would feel better if they knew that he was already dead, and not missing in space. To make the public believe them, the military started a massive campaign. They fabricated stories and even made a giant replica of the Chief's last battle, which of course never exactly took place.
This campaign is seen throughout the Halo 3 'Believe' pre-launch trailers.
The Arbiter was once know as Thel'Vadamee. He was once a Supreme Commander, but after the destruction of the first Halo, he was stripped of his rank and forced to don the ancient armour of the Arbiter.
There were 192 previous Arbiters before him, but they were all dead as the Arbiter was always sent on a suicide mission to gain back honour through death. However, the Prophets under estimated Thel'Vadamee's skill, and he survived.
After the Flood known as Gravemind revealed the true purpose of the Halo array to the Arbiter, he was doubtful, but he slowly began to see the truth in what Gravemind had said. He turned against the Covenant, and together with the rest of his Elite brethren, he allied with the humans.
With the help of Sergeant Johnson and Commander Miranda Keyes, the Arbiter killed the Brute Chieftain Tartarus, and stopped the firing of the Halo array. After armegeddon was averted, the Arbiter asked a ancient AI, 343 Guilty Spark, about the true purpose of the Halo array.
The Spark told the Arbiter that it was to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy, so that the Flood would die from starvation. This made the Arbiter finally believe everything that he had been told, and he pledged his loyalty to the humans, and he swore vengeance on the final surviving prophet leader, the Prophet of Truth.
After the defeat of the Covenant, the Arbiter became the leader of the Elites, and he became Ship Master of his own personal ship. He was separated from the Chief at the end of Halo 3, and since he was found and the Chief wasn't, it was presumed that the Chief was dead.
The Arbiter was present at the dedication to the memorial of those lost in the war. He was seen shaking hands with the leader of the human forces, Lord Hood. This represents the peace between the humans and the Elites. Lord Hood also thanks the Arbiter for sticking with the Chief to the end. The Arbiter and the remaining Elites then leave Earth.
Cortana is an Artificial Intelligence of the human forces. She is considered one of the best AI available, and she used to be the one controlling a human ship called the Pillar of Autumn. She is later given to the Master Chief, and she becomes his personal AI.
Cortana and the Chief have been through a lot together, and it has made them very close friends. In fact, she is considered as the love interest of the Chief. Yes, I know it's wrong to love a piece of technology, but the Chief is quite a robot himself, so I guess its alright.
Cortana was actually created from a flash cloned brain of Dr. Catherine Halsey, which is the scientist behind the Spartan project. Cortana share similar thoughts, memories and values as Dr. Halsey. Since Dr. Halsey is probably the closest thing to a mother that the Spartans had, this is probably the reason why the Chief cares a lot for Cortana.
Towards the end of Halo 2, the Chief left Cortana for the first time since the start of the Halo series. She chose to remain on the Prophet home world, High Charity, as she was trying to counter an AI that was preventing the Chief from returning to Earth. Before leaving her, the Chief promises that he will come back for her.
She eventually destroys it and Master Chief is able to take a small space craft back to Earth. However, High Charity soon gets overrun by the Flood, and Cortana gets captured by Gravemind, and Gravemind uses her to get the location of Earth.
Her relationship with the Chief was explored further in depth in Halo 3. She constantly flashes across the screen as you are playing, each time saying short sentences like "Don't make a girl a promise...If you can't keep it."
Master Chief eventually rescues Cortana, who was on the verge of getting corrupted by Gravemind, and with Cortana back in the Chief, they were able to stop the activation of the Ark. As they were trying to escape, the Arbiter got separated from the Chief and Cortana.
While the Arbiter made it back to Earth, Master Chief and Cortana drifted deep into space. Cortana activated a distress signal, but they knew that it would be weeks, or even years before they were found. As the Chief prepares to go into cyro sleep to await rescue, Cortana tells him, "I'll miss you." Master Chief replies by saying, "Wake me, when you need me."
Sergeant Major Avery Junior Johnson is a battle hardened Marine that is a major ally in all three Halo games. He has a never say die attitude, and he doesn't know the words 'give up'. Sergeant Johnson has a liking to rock music, which isn't shared among his fellow soldiers.
Sergeant Johnson is an expert marksman and he is constantly covering the Chief's back. However, the Chief often needs to rescue Johnson from enemy capture. Sergeant Johnson is also the only know human, other than the Master Chief, to have survived contact with the Flood.
Johnson actively participated in numerous missions ever since he entered the military at the age of nineteen. He is rumoured to be part of the Spartan I program, and is said to be the one of the two remaining Spartan I. The other Spartan I is Chief Mendez, the one responsible for training Master Chief and the other Spartan II's.
Sergeant Johnson was killed towards the end of Halo 3 by 343 Guilty Spark. Spark had tried to stop Johnson from firing the Halo array prematurely, but after Johnson ignored it, it burned a hold through Johnson's back with its main beam weapon.
Johnson was 81 years old when he died, and I know that he looks way younger than that age, but here's the explanation. Basically, people lived to a 150 years on average during that time in the future. People age slower. For example, a 20 year old in the future might look like a 8 year old today. So 81 years old in the future is equivalent to something like 50 years old today.
