Hello. The topic for today is the Temasek Polytechnic Freshmen Orientation Camp. Today's post is going to be a picture-less one.
I just got back yesterday, and I'm still really tired now. The camp was fun, but it was also damn exhausting.
Day 1 [Monday]I went to Say Yin's house in the morning. We met Andrew at the bus stop and we took a bus to TP. First thing I noticed when I got to the sports complex was that it was freakin noisy. The Freshmen were all normal, but the group leaders were high as ****.
When we walked into the hall, there were a few GLs standing outside, and they would cheer for us. They were saying something like "Welcome to FO". Now, I understand that they are trying to welcome us, but they should seriously say "FOC" instead of just "FO".
Firstly, "Welcome to Freshmen Orientation" is not a complete sentence, and secondly, when one of them muttered "FO" to his friend, I honestly thought that he was asking me to **** off.
Once we were in the hall, I had to queue by myself at the Rinku line. That's my group by the way.
Rinku. Means "link" in Japanese. The theme of the entire camp is "What's the link", so each group's name is derived from the word that means "link" from several different languages.
Say Yin and Andrew were both in the same group, which was of course different from mine. Unfortunate.
I just talked to a few people in the queue, and I talked to several GLs. Once I registered myself, I went to join others from my group. Then we immediately started
learning the cheers. Damn, I honestly don't like the cheering that much. What exactly is the significance of a cheer, some one please enlighten me.
So we just kept cheering and cheering, until it was time to make our
empire flag. FYI, the groups are called "empires" during the camp. Another thing that is supposed to make the concept of a group more interesting, but I fail to see the logic in it.
Anyways, we would only be provided with basic materials for the flag, and we had to
bid for everything else. To bid for items, we had to use a certain amount of points. And to indicate that we were interested in that particular item, we had to all shout "up the bid".
No offense to anyone, but I found this bidding thing quite a failure. We had this small group of Freshmen from our group designing the flag, so they were the only ones who really knew the materials we needed.
Eventually, due to some screw ups, we ended up with stuff we didn't need, like glitter. Sure, glitter could be used to make our flag look outstanding, but what is the point of having it when we didn't have glue. Instead, we had clear tape.
Then it was more cheering until dinner. After dinner
we went around Tampines playing various games at different stations set up at key locations. These games were fun, but I didn't like having to run around, especially not after dinner.
Once we got back, we had supper and debrief, and we finally got to sleep.
Day 2 [Tuesday]This is the longest day of the camp. We had
PT in the morning, which was honestly nothing close to actual PT. After that we had breakfast, then we gathered back at the hall. There was this
dancing queen competition.
Basically, each group had to select one female Freshmen to represent us, and she would just have to out dance the others. I was terrified by one of the participants because she looked like a guy. Supposed to be dancing queen, not king!!
Then there was
mass dance. I was super nervous man. I cannot dance. And the fact that I would be dancing with a girl I didn't know made me feel even more anxious. But it was fun. Although I sucked.
After having our lunch, we played more group games. Since it was raining, the games were played within TP. I really don't know if it makes a difference.
Outside the school, we have to run a lot. Inside the school, the stations are closer by, but that means we can play more games, so we have to run to more stations. I think there is no difference playing outside or inside school.
Once we got back, we had to prepare for our
performance night. During the actual performance, I think we did quite alright. Our performance consisted of four parts. There was TP Idol, TP's Next Top Model, a dancing competetion, and a mass dance my our entire group.
Performance night dragged on forever, more than 2 hours, because all five groups had to perform, and all the GLs of the five groups had their own performances as well. Not to mention the programmers and logistics people.
Once it was finally over, it was
disco time!! Super fun. Everyone was high. The lights went off, the music came on, and everyone started partying!! There were rings of people all over the hall, and people were dancing within the rings. Cool.
I took some videos using my phone. The quality isn't the greatest, and it's a little too dark to see much, but it's just to get a basic idea of how it was like:
*The videos will be up as soon as Blogger fixes their damn video uploading issues*
By the time we were allowed to sleep, I was super drained. I had a much better sleep this night compared to the first night.
Day 3 [Wednesday]This was the final day of the camp. Everyone was kinda tired from the dancing last night, so it was still quiet during breakfast time.
But after breakfast, it was time for
wet games. Really fun. Probably my favourite part of the camp. There is nothing more satisfying then being drenched by cold water during a hot day. In fact, I was screwing up on purpose some times, just to get the programmers to dump the water onto my head.
After wet games, we had lunch, and after lunch, it was time for one final chiong.
We were going to play a game called
Huntgry. Each group is given a list of tasks to complete. Most of the tasks could be carried out anywhere within the campus, while some required us to be at specific locations. We also had to to timed events, which would take place at set times.
Each event we complete will give us a point, and we would get a whole bunch of points if we completed special tasks, which required us to locate specific people. I didn't really enjoy this because I was having a stomach ache throughout the entire duration of the activity.
Once Huntgry was finally over, we just gathered back in the hall and the rankings of the empires were revealed. Rinku was last. Big surprise there. I wasn't really bothered by it, but the GLs were crying.
The third year GLs were also emo-ing because it was their last camp and all. I was kinda pissed at that point of time. We were all tired, and eager to leave, but they decided to go emo on us. Wow, I have enough energy drained out of me already, alright? No need to dampen the mood even further.
We were made to take photos and stuff for a while more, then we were finally allowed to go home. My dad was already waiting for me at the car park, and I was more than happy to get into his car and go home.
I think the FOC was fun, but it was a little too long, and kinda tiring. The more "outstanding" [read: damn high] people came across to me as over enthu. People, being high is one thing, and behaving like a lunatic is another. There is a difference.
================================================================================
Things are kinda hectic right now. I'm busy inviting people to my party this Saturday. I need to confirm the food orders. I'm praying that my Xbox won't die again. I don't have one single detail confirmed.
But it's alright, things are starting to fall into place. I finally managed to see Kim after five days!! five long and tiring days. Very happy now.
Ok, I'm done for today. Thanks for reading. Ending off, see you tomorrow.
